Being opposed

oppositionJames 4:6 makes a shocking statement.

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”

Being opposed by God is a desperate situation; it makes a strong statement about how he feels about pride. After reading this verse, I started thinking about pride.

Let me propose a definition.

I am being proud when I desire and believe that I deserve to be worshiped or praised.

Pride shapes both my response to and my treatment of others. If I desire praise, then I manipulate those around me to obtain it. If I believe that I deserve worship, then I become angry and defensive when I do not receive it.

It stands to reason that God opposes the proud. Only God deserves our worship and praise. I cannot worship God when I am seeking to be worshiped myself. When I live in this fundamental truth and avoid pride, then I am practicing humility.

Here’s the good news. The contrast to God’s opposition is God’s favor. This is truly a blessed position. You can trust God at his word – try humility and see how he responds!
