My dog Beaux is a slave to tennis balls. He will chase and retrieve a ball as many times as I throw it. He can be sleeping, eating, or chewing a bone. If he hears the sound of a bouncing ball, he immediately chases it… full sprint… no hesitation.
Do you have a tennis ball that you chase? Maybe it’s an unhealthy relationship. Maybe it’s comfort food. Maybe it’s money or career or even your phone (social media)! The good news is that God wants to deliver you from slavery, from every idol.
Take a look at John 4. This chapter tells the story of Jesus passing through Samaria and getting a drink at Jacob’s well in the heat of the day. The story is remarkable because Jesus asked for this drink from a Samaritan, a Samaritan woman. This was unthinkable for a Jewish man during that time. Their exchange was not really about water, though.
After Jesus requested his drink, the woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” (verse 15)
Jesus reveals himself to her as the Messiah, the long awaited Savior. He offers himself as the alternative to constantly returning to the well, eternal satisfaction for a relentless thirst. Jesus also offers you the freedom from whatever it is that you consistently chase, that thing that always grabs your attention, the bad habit you can’t shake.
It’s time to reject the bouncing ball and choose Jesus. Seek him. He’s waiting.
